My First Kundalini Yoga Experience — And Why I Came Back

Written by Tina Hopff on March 1, 2026

Welcome to my reflection on the profound journey of Kundalini Yoga, a practice that completely transformed my life. When I attended my very first class, the internal shift was so overwhelming and intense that I actually vowed never to return. Yet, after a six-month hiatus, something called me back, sparking over 12 years of personal practice and a decade of teaching. Through this text, I want to address the common misconceptions about the intensity of Kundalini Yoga, share how it safely regulates the nervous system and releases stored stress, and remind you that you don’t need perfection—only your breath and participation—to experience its deep, healing power.

Let’s talk about your first Kundalini Yoga class…

Close your eyes for a moment and think back—
What did it feel like? What did you experience?
Did you need a break after class one… or even two?

You’re not alone.

For many, that first encounter with Kundalini Yoga feels like a total reset — a deep reconnection with something within that’s hard to put into words. It’s powerful… and sometimes, yes, overwhelming.

I remember my first class so clearly.

After my very first Kundalini Yoga experience, I felt such a huge internal shift that my immediate thought was:
“I’m never doing that again.”

And I meant it.

It wasn’t because something was wrong — it was because something was too right. Something had moved, opened, awakened… and I didn’t yet have the language or understanding to hold it.

So I stayed away.

For six months.

And then… I came back.

And since then, I haven’t stopped.

The Power of the First Experience

Kundalini Yoga is not your typical yoga class. It’s not just about stretching or strengthening the body. It works through breath, movement, mantra, and meditation to shift energy, regulate the nervous system, and bring subconscious patterns to the surface.

That means your first class can feel like:

  • A deep emotional release
  • A surge of energy
  • A sense of clarity or confusion
  • Or simply… a lot

And that’s okay.

Your body and your soul are adjusting.

There’s a saying in Kundalini Yoga:
“As a teacher, we poke, provoke, and elevate. As a student, you do the best you can.”

This practice is designed to challenge you — gently, but truthfully. It moves what has been stuck, expands awareness, and reconnects you to your inner truth.

Is Kundalini Yoga Dangerous?

This is a question that comes up often.

I sometimes see a flicker of hesitation when I tell people I teach Kundalini Yoga. There’s a narrative out there — that it’s too intense, too mystical, maybe even unsafe.

After over 12 years of personal practice and more than a decade of teaching, here’s my truth:

Kundalini Yoga is not about forcing anything.

It’s about preparing your body and mind to hold more of yourself.

Each class is carefully structured to:

  • Strengthen and regulate the nervous system
  • Release stored stress and trauma
  • Re-pattern limiting beliefs
  • Expand awareness safely and gradually

Yes, the experience can feel intense at times.

But intensity is not the same as danger.

When your awareness expands, when you reconnect with your spirit, it can feel unfamiliar — even overwhelming. But what if that’s not something to fear?

What if that’s your soul calling you home?

What Changed for Me

Through Kundalini Yoga, I didn’t become someone new.

I returned to who I already was.

What I’ve lost:

  • Anxiety
  • Fear
  • Depression
  • Toxic patterns

What I’ve gained:

  • Mental clarity
  • Deep trust in life
  • Self-love and discipline
  • The ability to truly be present

This is not just a physical practice.

It’s a remembering.

You Don’t Have to Be “Good” at It

One of the biggest misconceptions about yoga is that you need to be flexible, strong, or experienced.

Kundalini Yoga meets you exactly where you are.

If you can breathe, you can practice.

I’ve seen this transformation firsthand.

I once had a woman in her 70s join my class. She had a knee injury and couldn’t sit on the floor, so she practiced on a chair. By her second class, she sat on the floor with support. By her third, she was sitting cross-legged with ease.

That’s the power of this practice.

It’s not about perfection — it’s about participation.

Even if you can’t physically do an exercise, simply breathing with awareness and visualizing the movement has a profound effect. And just being in the space — in that collective energy — already creates change.

Why I Still Practice

Today, I choose Kundalini Yoga again and again.

To shift.
To release.
To reset.

Whether I’m teaching or stepping onto the mat as a student, it continues to meet me exactly where I am — and gently guide me deeper.

There’s no “end point” here.

Just layers unfolding.

If Your First Class Felt Like Too Much…

Take a breath.

That doesn’t mean it wasn’t right for you.

It might mean it touched something real.

It’s okay to pause. It’s okay to take space. But trust that your body knows what it’s doing. Trust that your soul is guiding you.

And when you’re ready…

Come back.

Are You Ready for Your Next Shift?

Kundalini Yoga is an experience.
A journey.
A return to yourSelf.

So stay curious. Ask questions. Trust what you feel.

And when the moment comes —
I’ll meet you on the mat.
